Editorial Concept:
UNDERGROUND
Welcome to the creative journey behind 'UNDERGROUND' magazine. Join me as I unveil the step-by-step process of bringing this fashion and lifestyle publication to life. From logo creation to layout design, discover the meticulous craftsmanship and strategic decision-making that shaped every aspect of this dynamic editorial.
Name and Logo Creation:
I began by conceptualizing the name and logo for "UNDERCOVER" magazine, sketching out various logo concepts that aligned with the magazine's vision.
I created different versions of the logo in vector format and presented them to the client for approval.
Grid Layout Design:
Next, I established a grid layout as a reference for organizing content in a clear and structured manner. Utilizing a column grid layout commonly found in newspapers and magazines, I ensured readability and visual coherence throughout the publication.
Magazine Cover Exploration:
I explored multiple magazine cover concepts, experimenting with different text placements, layouts, and imagery to determine the ideal style for "UNDERCOVER." Through the creation of 8 distinct cover concepts, I honed in on a design that effectively captured the magazine's essence and allure. I also explored how other pages like a masthead, advertisement, and back cover page could potentially look like.
As the project progressed, I made a pivotal decision to refine the magazine's identity by transitioning from a logo concept to featuring the magazine's name, "UNDERGROUND," as the focal point. This shift better aligned with the editorial's overall tone and essence, reflecting its rebellious spirit and underground culture. Embracing this change exemplifies my adaptability and commitment to ensuring the magazine's cohesiveness and resonance with its audience.
Flat-Plan Drafting:
Developing the initial draft of the flat-plan, I meticulously mapped out the magazine's content and layout. This process facilitated error identification, progress tracking, and content organization, ensuring a seamless workflow and timely delivery.
Typography Selection:
With careful consideration, I selected Montserrat as the main typography for "UNDERGROUND" magazine. Recognizing its elegant and minimalistic aesthetic, I determined that Montserrat best encapsulated the publication's overall look and feel, contributing to its cohesive visual identity.
Featured Article Layout Sample:
To provide a preview of the magazine's design and layout, I created a sample layout of the featured article spread. This step allowed for client feedback and ensured alignment with expectations, minimizing revisions and optimizing efficiency in the editorial process.
Flat-Plan Revision and Finalization:
Incorporating feedback from stakeholders, I revisited and refined the flat-plan of the magazine, addressing any identified issues or adjustments. Through collaborative iteration, the flat-plan was finalized, ensuring cohesion and coherence across all pages.
Final Page Production:
With the flat-plan approved, I proceeded to finalize the individual pages of the magazine, meticulously crafting each layout and incorporating content and imagery. Ensuring adherence to design standards and aesthetic guidelines, the final pages were prepared for print production, marking the culmination of the creative process.
